Every child is unique, and so is their cultures and traditions.
In our classrooms and neighbourhoods, we can find toddlers from different backgrounds, ethnicities, languages, religions, and cultures. That is why it is vital to acknowledge their individuality and teach children to celebrate diversity from a young age.
South Africa celebrates Heritage Day to celebrate these individualities, appreciate various traditions and customs in the nation as it is brimming with diverse cultures.
But how can we teach our children to live cordially with other children? In this blog, we will dive into some creative ways to teach children about diversity.
Before we talk about incredible ways to celebrate diversity, do you know that for many nationals, Heritage Day is “Braai Day”, meaning families and friends come together under a roof and feast on their favourite and delicious South African foods like Braaibroodjie, pap and chakalaka, Shisanyama (braai meat) and milk tart.
Now, are you ready to know some creative ways to teach diversity to children? Let’s get started!
1. Celebrate Festivals from Around the World
Grab a calendar and look for festivals that can be celebrated at home or in preschools across different countries. You can also choose a festival that best represents your child’s class. When the holiday is around the corner, you can educate your child about the importance of that day, play dress-up, or cook the local dish from that country together. You can also collaborate with preschools and other parents to host a class lunch during that holiday. It is surely going to be a life experience for you and your child.
2. Express Through Music and Art
This is one of the grooviest and most creative ways to teach diversity to children. Everybody loves good music and interesting art forms. Introduce your preschooler to some folk songs or unique artwork that can help them understand different cultures. Talk about the meaning and importance of music, explore different musical instruments, and see if you can find some of those instruments as well.
You can also encourage them to try new art styles from various cultures, help them create a distinct art piece, and maybe decorate your fridge with their creations.
3. Explore Multicultural Libraries and Museums
Libraries and museums are a great way to educate your child about cultures around the world. Take your toddlers to Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History in Pretoria, which will enlighten them about the rich South African history of struggles and overcoming them. This would be a perfect day to celebrate Heritage Day with your family. You can also head to public libraries in SA and explore some child-appropriate books on multiculturism. This will boost their curiosity for diversity.
4. Read About Differences
Educate your preschooler about differences – be it physical or cultural. Maybe indulge in role-play that will help them understand about such differences in a better way. They’ll be more empathetic. Talk about diversity and ask their opinions to make sure that they understand about differences. You can use some creative ways to teach diversity to children like watching documentaries, movies, or musicals.
5. Be a Role Model
Children always imitate what they see around them. Hence, as a caregiver, you should also model an inclusive behaviour. Let them see that you love everybody irrespective of how they look, what religion they belong to, or what language they speak. Children will mirror your actions, and it is your responsibility to educate them about diversity.
How Do South Africans Usually Celebrate Heritage Day?
On 24th September, every South African citizen comes together without losing their individual identity. The nation is built on diversity, and we can see that come to life on this day.
Families gather to enjoy delicious braais. There are various parades, heritage walks which are organised by the state and every community takes part in these events excitedly. Additionally, there are special events where children are enlightened about South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
